Bert Lewyn

Bert Lewyn was born Dagobert Lewin to Leopold and Johanna Wolff Lewin in Berlin, Germany on April 2, 1923. He was only eighteen when Gestapo officers knocked on his family’s Berlin home and told them to pack their bags. From this day forth Bert’s life was thrown into chaos; he would never see his parents again. From working as a slave laborer in a munitions factory, to ripping off his yellow star & becoming a fugitive, Bert would spend the next seven years “underground,” hiding with righteous gentiles and in bombed out buildings, surviving through grit, perseverence, helpful comrades, and more than a couple of miracles. After the war, Bert spent a few years in the Feldafing Displaced Persons Camp, before making his way to the US to join family in Atlanta, GA. There he would make his life, build a successful business, marry his wife Esther, and have many children and grandchildren. Bert passed away peacefully in his Atlanta home on January 3, 2016 after a long battle with Alzheimers. He is survived by his wife, their five children, and six grandchildren.

Bev Saltzman Lewyn is the former Coordinator of News Research for CNN’s National Desk.   She is the co-founder of Jewish Women’s Connection of Atlanta and is presently co-writing SuperParenting to the Rescue:  Getting Your Kids To Listen, Cooperate, and DO!   She lives in Atlanta with her husband Marc.  They have four daughters.
